JACKSON, Mississippi (WLBT) – Residents of Jackson are increasingly tired of waiting for the new water billing system and new meters as growing bills arrive in the mail.
According to a customer, the city knows the system is down, but appears to be lacking in concern.
âI first started this process without children,â Emmberly Jefferson said. âNow I have two, I will soon be three. “
The Old Canton Road resident has not received a water bill from Jackson for four years despite efforts to get a statement. She requested that her hidden back meter be moved forward like her neighbors in the hope of receiving a bill.
The 30-year-old learned that a work order had been placed, but nothing was done.
âIn 2017, after going back and forth for a year, I said y’know what, I’m not going to go anymore,â Jefferson said. âI’m not going to call anymore. I will receive an invoice every time they send it.
A statement arrived for over $ 1,400 this weekend. The legal assistant recorded her calls, visits and estimated bills. She wants a quick overhaul of the broken system.
âJust keep hitting deadlock after deadlock and get poor customer service when you call, if someone answers the phone,â said the frustrated water customer.
According to Jackson’s acting director of communications, Ashley McLaughlin, a new online Digital Self Serve portal is now available on the city’s website. It is under UMS Meter and Billing Updates and allows customers to create their own login and see their invoices in real time to compare usage.
Utility Metering Solutions is currently installing new commercial meters. McLaughlin said that if a citizen receives an irregular bill, the water utility has been asked to prioritize this meter review to see if it is malfunctioning so they can get an updated meter or water meter. replacement.
âSomething has to be done, and something has to be done soon,â Jefferson said.
Investigations are underway on residential meters. This installation is expected to begin in January. The project is expected to be finalized by November 2023.
